Every few months someone publishes a blockchain comparison chart. Columns for TPS, finality time, gas costs, number of validators. These charts are useless for making real decisions. TPS is a theoretical maximum nobody hits in production. Gas costs change with network load. And "finality time" means different things on different chains.

We have built gaming backends and prediction market systems on Solana, on Ethereum mainnet, on Arbitrum, on Base, and on Polygon. The right chain depends on what you are actually building. Not on a spreadsheet.

This is a decision framework. Not a feature chart.

The two use cases that matter here

Gaming and prediction markets share a common requirement. They need to confirm user actions fast enough that the experience feels responsive. A player places a bet. A gamer opens a loot box. A trader takes a position on an election outcome. In all of these, the user expects feedback in under two seconds.

But the similarity ends there. Games tend to generate extremely high transaction volumes at low individual value. A single game session might produce hundreds of on chain actions. Prediction markets generate fewer transactions but at much higher individual value, and they need accurate, timely oracle data to resolve outcomes.

These differences push you toward different chains for different reasons.

Solana for games

Solana is the best chain for on chain gaming right now. That is a strong opinion and I will defend it.

The reason is not raw TPS. The reason is that Solana's fee model makes micro transactions economically viable. A single Solana transaction costs roughly 0.00025 SOL. At $150 per SOL, that is about 3.7 cents. An equivalent transaction on Ethereum mainnet during moderate congestion costs $2 to $8. On Arbitrum or Base, it costs 1 to 10 cents depending on L1 calldata costs.

When your game generates 200 transactions per user per session, the math is simple. On Solana, a session costs the user about $7.40 in fees. On Ethereum mainnet, it costs $400 to $1,600. Even on L2s, you are looking at $2 to $20 per session. For a casual game, $20 in gas per session is a dealbreaker.

Solana's 400ms slot time also matters for games. Players get visual confirmation of their action before the next game tick. On Ethereum, even with optimistic confirmations on L2s, you are waiting 2 to 12 seconds depending on the rollup and the sequencer load.

Where Solana hurts for games

The developer tooling is worse. Anchor has improved a lot but it is still behind Hardhat and Foundry in terms of testing, debugging, and deployment tooling. If your team knows Solidity and has never written Rust, expect 6 to 8 weeks of ramp up time. That is real calendar time and real money.

Solana's account model is also genuinely confusing for developers used to Ethereum's storage model. Instead of a contract owning its own state, you pass accounts into every instruction. This is powerful for parallelism but it produces bugs that do not exist on EVM chains. We have seen teams accidentally allow one user's account to be passed where another user's account was expected, creating a whole class of authorization vulnerabilities.

Network stability has improved dramatically since the outage problems of 2022 and 2023. But Solana still has degraded performance periods where transaction landing rates drop. For a game, a 30 second period where transactions fail to land means 30 seconds of frozen gameplay. Your backend needs retry logic with exponential backoff, and your frontend needs to handle pending states gracefully.

Ethereum L2s for prediction markets

Prediction markets have different constraints. Transaction volume per user is lower. Individual transaction value is higher. And the system depends heavily on oracles resolving outcomes correctly.

For prediction markets, we favor Arbitrum or Base over Solana. Here is why.

Liquidity and composability

Prediction markets need liquidity to function. A market with thin order books produces bad prices and wide spreads, which drives away sophisticated traders, which makes the prices even worse. It is a death spiral.

Ethereum L2s inherit the liquidity of the Ethereum ecosystem. Your users can bridge USDC from mainnet in minutes. Market makers who already operate on Ethereum can deploy capital to your L2 market without learning a new tech stack. On Solana, you are isolated from the Ethereum liquidity pool entirely. Your market makers need to hold SOL and operate Solana infrastructure.

Composability matters too. If your prediction market integrates with Aave for yield on idle collateral, or with Uniswap for hedging, those protocols exist on Arbitrum and Base. On Solana, you are building those integrations with Marinade, Raydium, or Jupiter. The options exist but the ecosystem is smaller.

Oracle availability

Chainlink has better coverage on Ethereum and its L2s than on Solana. For a prediction market, you might need price feeds, sports data, election results, or weather data. On Ethereum L2s, Chainlink and UMA give you broad coverage. On Solana, Pyth is excellent for price feeds but coverage for non financial data is thinner.

If your prediction market resolves based on a sports score or an election result, you will likely need a custom oracle or a decentralized resolution mechanism like UMA's optimistic oracle. UMA runs on Ethereum. Building equivalent dispute resolution infrastructure on Solana is possible but it is a significant engineering effort.

The finality question

Prediction markets settle real money. When a market resolves and $500K in payouts are distributed, you want strong finality guarantees. Ethereum L2s post their state to Ethereum mainnet and inherit Ethereum's security. Once the state is finalized on L1, reversing it requires attacking Ethereum itself.

Solana's finality is different. A transaction is "confirmed" after a supermajority of validators vote on the block. This is fast and generally reliable. But Solana has experienced rollbacks. They are rare. But "rare" and "never" are different things when you are settling half a million dollars.

For high-value settlement, Ethereum's security model is more conservative and that conservatism is a feature.

How the L2s compare

Not all L2s are the same. Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync have meaningfully different characteristics.

Arbitrum has the most mature ecosystem and the highest TVL among optimistic rollups. It also has Arbitrum Orbit, which lets you launch an app-specific L3 that settles to Arbitrum. For a large prediction market that needs its own block space, this is interesting.

Base has Coinbase behind it. That means fiat on ramps and a path to retail users who have Coinbase accounts but have never used a blockchain directly. If your target user is not crypto native, Base reduces the onboarding friction significantly.

Optimism is architecturally similar to Base (both use the OP Stack) but has a different governance structure and a different user base. The Superchain vision means interoperability between OP Stack chains will improve over time. If you need to operate across multiple L2s, being in the OP ecosystem is an advantage.

zkSync uses zero-knowledge proofs instead of fraud proofs. The theoretical advantage is faster finality to L1. The practical reality as of early 2026 is that the proving infrastructure is still more expensive and the developer tooling is less mature than the optimistic rollups. We would use zkSync for applications where the ZK proof itself is part of the product value proposition, not just for general-purpose deployment.

The decision framework

When a team asks us where to deploy, we ask five questions.

First, how many transactions does a single user generate per session? If the answer is more than 50, Solana or an app-specific rollup. If it is under 50, an L2 is fine.

Second, what is the average transaction value? If it is under $1, you need sub-cent gas costs. That means Solana. If it is over $10, gas costs on L2s are noise.

Third, what oracles do you need? If you need non financial data feeds, Ethereum L2s have better options right now.

Fourth, where is your liquidity? If you need to attract market makers and LPs, go where they already are. Today that is still the Ethereum ecosystem for DeFi liquidity. For retail users, Base has a strong on ramp story.

Fifth, what does your team know? A team of Solidity developers will ship faster on an EVM chain. A team of Rust developers will be more productive on Solana. Shipping speed matters. The chain you launch on in month three is better than the perfect chain you launch on in month nine.

The hybrid approach

Some of the best systems we have built use multiple chains. Game logic on Solana where the transaction volume lives. Settlement and treasury on an Ethereum L2 where the liquidity lives. A bridge in between, operated by the protocol.

This is more complex to build and operate. You need bridge monitoring, stuck transaction handling, and reconciliation between two different state models. But it lets you use each chain for what it is actually good at instead of forcing one chain to do everything.

We built a prediction market last year that ran its order matching on Solana for speed and settled winning positions on Arbitrum for composability with the broader DeFi ecosystem. The bridge added about 4 minutes of latency to withdrawals. Users did not care because they were not withdrawing mid-game. They cared that bet placement was fast, and it was.

What will change

This framework has a shelf life. Ethereum's roadmap includes significant throughput improvements. Solana's developer tooling is improving quickly. New L2s and L3s launch monthly. The specific numbers in this article will be outdated within a year.

But the framework itself will hold. Ask what your application actually needs. Look at transaction volume, transaction value, oracle requirements, liquidity, and team capability. Pick the chain that best fits those specific constraints. Ignore the TPS charts.

The teams that get this wrong usually get it wrong because they chose a chain for ideological reasons or because they saw a conference talk. The teams that get it right chose based on their specific use case and their specific team. That is the whole framework. It is not complicated. But it requires honesty about what you are actually building and who is actually building it.
